Don't appear pushy or offer too much money: Vietnamese people usually don't like to be rushed.
Drink plenty of bottled water: Especially in summer, you should drink at least 2 liters of water per day. If you drink tea, coffee, and alcohol, you need to drink more water because they can dehydrate you.
Don't carry too much cash when walking around the streets.
Don't wear too much jewelry: There are two reasons for this: (1) Showing off wealth in public is considered impolite; (2) You are more likely to become a victim of pickpocketing or bag snatching.
Don't be overly concerned about security; just be aware of your surroundings.
Don't wear tank tops, shorts, dresses, or tops with low necklines and bare shoulders to Temples and Pagodas. Doing so is considered extremely rude and offensive.
Avoid giving empty water bottles, sweets, or pens to local people when trekking through ethnic minority villages. You cannot guarantee that the empty bottles will be disposed of properly, and local people do not have access to dental care. If you want to give pens, ask your guide to introduce you to the local teacher and donate them to the entire community.
Never sleep or sit with the soles of your feet pointing towards the family altar when in someone else's house.
Don't lose your temper in public or when bargaining for purchases. This is considered a serious loss of face for both parties. Always maintain a cheerful and calm demeanor, and you will be treated the same way.
Don't take photos of military installations or anything related to the military. This can be seen as a breach of national security.
Don't take video cameras into ethnic minority villages. They are considered too intrusive by local people.
However, don't be overly paranoid. In general, Vietnamese people appreciate when you try to follow their customs and are forgiving if you make mistakes or forget. If you make an effort, you will be rewarded.
